The Daily Echo: A Message to Ironman from Lionel Sanders on draft zone: January 10, 2026

January 10, 2026

This video is about PROFESSIONAL IRONMAN racing only. At the speeds professional triathletes race, the draft effect at a 12-meter bike distance is significantly higher than it is for age-group athletes. Professional athletes are riding faster, producing more power, and spending more time at speeds where aerodynamic benefit persists far beyond 12 meters. This is not the case for amateur racing. At lower average speeds, the draft effect drops off much more quickly — meaning the current discussion does not apply equally across fields. Recently, IRONMAN funded a drafting study using RaceRanger technology, testing 12m, 16m, and 20m draft zones with professional athletes. The results, along with feedback collected by ProTriNews, show a clear trend: 74% of Top 100 IRONMAN Pro Series ranked men 83% of Top 100 IRONMAN Pro Series ranked women Support moving to a 20-meter draft zone. Among professionals who have actually raced under a 20-meter draft zone, over 90% prefer it. This is not about changing the nature of amateur racing. This is about preserving IRONMAN as a true individual test at the professional level, in a sport where speeds, equipment, and race dynamics have evolved. IRONMAN executives are expected to discuss this issue shortly. If you are a professional triathlete, now is the time to stand up and make your voice heard publicly or directly through IRONMAN Pro Membership. This decision will shape the future of professional non-drafting triathlon. Video by Talbot Cox
